Never before has anyone taken the kora and done such stylish and effortlessly cool things with it, even if much of it, like the track titles, remain a mystery. SONGLINES (...)he turned his back on Encre last year to explore the kora, the sub-Saharian African instrument, whose best known exponent is the Mali master Toumani Diabate. And it's the kora which provides the drive to his hypnotic and engaging debut Churning Strides (Blank Tapes) together with his fragile cracked vocals. GLASGOW SUNDAY HERALD Recorded in intimate close-up, you can feel the weight of his fingers in the hypnotically rhythmic, near-10 minute "Swaying Eel", while spidery picking adds to "Sharpened Suede"'s peasant horror. Slyly funny, subtly odd stuff. UNCUT Churning Strides is modern folk near its zenith point – captivating with its simplicity yet possessing an indescribable charm that only the true greats, from Drake onwards, have exuded through the very lightest touch of fingertips upon strings.
